Hunting Video

A hunting video used to be a sort of pipe dream. A video camera in its initial configuration was nothing to take into the wilderness. It was a high end piece of electronics that didn’t play well with wet, cold, and dirt. All of those elements are found on a hunting trip, and so video recording equipment was already looking at one strike against it.

The second strike against a hunting video was a machismo conflict. If you were shooting a video, you were not shooting game. Long after the technical difficulties involved in bringing a video camera on the hunt had been circumvented, there was still a stigma attached to recording the hunt. This left early videos somewhat lacking in the dramatic department.

This was because setting up a tripod from your cover spot and trying to hone in on a target that may or may not be visible in the video while your friend shoots it doesn’t lead to the best quality of video. And the resolution was another problem that was betting against hunting videos. Put it all together, and it wasn’t until the advent of digital camcorders and high resolution video that a hunting video became something that was not only cool, but a medium through which a hunter could actually convey the thrill of the hunt to those who couldn’t come along. Today a good hunting video can also make a hunter famous, uploading it to Youtube is a sure way to get other people to watch it.
