Hunting Supply FAQs

What do I need to legally hunt?
The first thing you will need is a hunting license. The requirements for a license vary by state, but a safe bet is that you will have to show proficiency in firearm safety and also attend a hunting safety class. Additionally, depending on which hunt you want to participate in you may be required to purchase a tag for your game.

What is a hunting tag?
Hunting tags are used for big game. While there is no rigidly defined category of big game, if you are looking to bag something with hooves in North America, you probably need a tag to do it. The reason for this is that the populations of most species are carefully monitored by the Division of Wildlife Resources, and the number of tags is set based on population controls. There may not be enough animals to allow every hunter in an area to kill one without endangering the local environment.

If there are more hunters than wildlife, what happens?

If there are more hunters interested in getting a certain tag than the local division has made available, a lottery is created.  The lottery doles out the tags each year among the hunters interested in that hunt. In some locations, there is a waiting list of years just to get a certain kind of tag. It is common practice in those situations to disqualify you from getting another tag for a few years after you are awarded one.
